主要内容

Dr Ming Zhao will present some recent outcomes of his research on vortex-induced vibration (VIV) using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). He will focus on the very fundamental case of VIV of an elastically supported, rigid cylinder in fluid flow. The results from three-dimensional CFD simulations will be discussed. In offshore engineering, cylindrical structures such as subsea pipelines and riser pipes are important facilities used to transport oil and gas products. When a circular cylinder is placed in a fluid flow, the vortex shedding flow in the wake of the cylinder leads to the so-called vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of the cylinder. High response amplitude is achieved when the vortex shedding frequency synchronizes with the vibration frequency. Severe VIV may lead to structural failure. Due to its significance, VIV has been investigated extensively in the past decades. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has been proved to be an efficient and effective method for studying fluid-structure interaction.

主讲人简介:

Dr Ming Zhao currently works as an Associate professor at School of Computing, Engineering and Mathematics, Western Sydney University, Australia. Ming’s research areas include offshore fluid-structure interaction, flow-induced vibrations of offshore structures and local scour around subsea structures. He has received a number of research projects funded by Australian Research Council and published over 100 journal papers. He received his PhD degree at the State Key Laboratory of Coastal and Offshore Engineering (SLCOE), Dalian University of Technology, China in 2003 and worked at SLCOE as a postdoctoral fellow for two years. Between 2005 and 2011, he worked in the School of Civil and Resource Engineering, the University of Western Australia as a research associate and research assistant professor.
